What “media blasting” actually means
“Media blasting” is the umbrella term. Every blasting job is compressed air pushing some kind of abrasive — the media — at a surface to strip whatever is on it. Sandblasting is simply media blasting with a hard mineral abrasive. Soda blasting is media blasting with sodium bicarbonate, essentially a very pure, very fine baking soda. Same equipment family, completely different behavior at the surface.
The media you pick controls three things: how fast the coating comes off, how much profile (roughness) is left behind for the new coating to grip, and how much risk there is of warping, pitting or gouging the substrate underneath.
Soda blasting: gentle, non-destructive, no profile
Sodium bicarbonate crystals fracture on impact. That fracturing is what does the work — the energy shatters the coating loose instead of cutting into the material below. Soda is soft enough that it will not etch glass, will not pit chrome, and will not thin out sheet metal.
- Thin-gauge metal and aluminum — car bodies, trailer skins, boat rails, aluminum patio structures where heat and aggressive abrasive would warp the panel.
- Fiberglass and gelcoat — hulls and decks where you need paint off without chewing into the laminate.
- Wood — beams, docks, pergolas and old siding, where the goal is to lift paint and grey fibers while keeping the grain.
- Masonry, brick and delicate architectural detail — historic facades and decorative concrete.
- Anything greasy or smelly — soda degreases and deodorizes as it strips, which is why it shows up in engine bay, bilge and fire/smoke cleanup work.
The trade-offs are real, though. Soda is slower on heavy rust and thick industrial coatings, it costs more per square foot, and — this is the one people forget — it leaves no anchor profile. If your next step is a high-performance coating that needs a roughened surface to bite into, soda alone is not enough. Soda residue is also alkaline and must be washed off thoroughly before priming, or the new paint can fail. And soda kills plants, so vegetation around the work area gets covered and rinsed.
Sandblasting: fast, aggressive, leaves a profile
Traditional abrasive blasting uses harder media that cuts. It removes scale, mill finish, layered coatings and deep rust far faster than soda, and it leaves the textured profile that primers, epoxies and powder coatings are engineered to grab.

Note that “sandblasting” is the common name, not always a literal description of the media. Depending on the substrate and the coating we may run garnet, crushed glass, aluminum oxide or another abrasive, each with a different hardness and cut rate. Part of the estimate is picking that.
The quick decision rule
Ask two questions:
- Can the substrate take a hit? Thick steel, concrete and masonry: yes — sandblast. Thin metal, aluminum, fiberglass, wood, chrome, glass nearby: no — soda blast.
- What goes on next? A coating that requires an anchor profile means abrasive blasting, or soda first to strip and a light abrasive pass after to create the profile. Bare finish, polish, or a simple repaint on sound material: soda is often plenty.
On plenty of Miami jobs the answer is both. We soda blast a fiberglass deck and abrasive blast the steel frame it sits on, in the same visit, because we bring the equipment to the site.
What Miami’s climate does to this decision
Salt air, humidity and near-daily summer rain change the math here versus a dry climate. Bare steel in South Florida can start flash-rusting within hours of being blasted clean, so blasting and priming have to be scheduled tightly together — do not let a contractor strip your gate on Friday and come back Monday to coat it. We plan the blast around the coating schedule and the weather window, not the other way around.
Humidity also matters for soda specifically: sodium bicarbonate is hygroscopic, so damp media clogs and sputters. It is a manageable problem with the right equipment and dry air, but it is a reason a cheap rig produces streaky results in August.
Containment, dust and your neighbors
Whichever media we use, a mobile job in a Miami neighborhood, a marina or an HOA property means containment: tarps and screens around the work zone, covering vehicles, pools, screens and landscaping, and cleaning up spent media before we leave. Soda rinses away with water and is not toxic, but it will still burn plants and needs to be flushed. Abrasive media gets swept and collected. If your property or association has rules about dust, working hours or wash-water runoff, tell us up front — it changes staging, not whether the job can be done.

Common questions
Is soda blasting more expensive than sandblasting? Usually yes per square foot — the media costs more and cuts slower. It is still the cheaper choice when the alternative is replacing a warped panel or a gouged hull.
Will soda blasting remove rust? It removes light surface rust and the coatings over it, but it will not cut established, pitted rust the way abrasive media will. Heavy rust means abrasive blasting.
